Warrick, 'Noles run away from Bulldogs

Following their 41-7 thrashing of Louisiana Tech Saturday, Florida State University remains at the top of the Associated Press football poll.

Right on their heels is Penn State, which is coming off an impressive 41-7 victory over then-No. 4 Arizona. The Nittany Lions climbed to within two first-place votes of the 'Noles.

Seminole receiver Peter Warrick began his Heisman pursuit with an impressive opening act, grabbing nine passes for 121 yards. Warrick, who postponed his professional career to return to Florida State for his senior season, turned in the early favorite for Play of the Year. With the game deadlocked at seven late in the second quarter, Warrick took a reverse 20 yards to paydirt while eluding several would-be Bulldog tacklers. Warrick's touchdown opened the floodgates as the Seminoles then scored 27 unanswered points.

Block happy: N.C. State took advantage of three blocked punts, including one with 3:32 left in the contest for a 23-20 upset victory over Texas. Terrence Holt jumped into the limelight that his brother previously had occupied with two of the blocks, including the game winner.

Holt is the younger brother of current St. Louis Ram and former N.C. State All-American Torry Holt. The victory moved the Pack into the AP poll where they settled in as the 24th-ranked squad after being unranked. The win continued their three-year string of early season upsets following victories over the 'Noles in 1998 and Syracuse in 1997.

The game did expose some early season offensive woes for the Pack, however. The offense totaled just seven first downs, and starting quarterback Jamie Barnett completed 9-26 passes for 65 yards and one interception.

QB question marks: Clemson coach Tommy Bowden has yet to name a starting quarterback for his team's season opener against Marshall Saturday. The candidates are last year's returning starter, Brandon Streeter, who passed for 1,938 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Tigers last season. His competition, Woddy Dantzler, is better known for his scrambling ability. Dantzler attempted just 17 passes in five games last season. Clemson will be looking for their 200th all-time victory in Clemson Memorial Coliseum, where they are now 199-78-7.

The Terrapins' quarterback situation also remains unsettled. Sophomore Randall Jones and redshirt freshman Calvin McCall are listed as co-starters and coach Ron Vanderlinden has not announced how he will use his two quarterbacks in tomorrow night's opener against Temple.

Bye bye Pete: Due to a nagging back injury, Pete Sampras pulled out of the U.S. Open yesterday. Sampras, who has won four U.S. Opens, has a herniated disk in his lower back, which he says he injured during practice Sunday.

The injury, which Sampras said would keep him sidelined for "quite some time," delays his bid to win the most Grand Slam titles in history. He currently stands tied with Roy Emerson at 12 titles.
