A female University Health System employee was assaulted and robbed by an unidentified black male on 11th Street near Trax shortly before midnight Monday, Charlottesville Police said.
The victim reported she "was struck with a blunt object," Lt. R.O. Jones said. "She doesn't know what it was."
The victim was treated for minor injuries at University Hospital.
The attacker was described as a 5 feet, 6 inch tall black man weighing about 140 pounds, Jones said.
The assailant stole the victim's purse before leaving the scene, he said. He declined to disclose the estimated value of the stolen goods.
The Charlottesville Police Investigations Department now is handling the case, Jones said. He could not say whether any suspects have been named and the Investigations Department could not be reached for comment.
Trax owner Dana Murphy said although the attack occurred nearby, the area surrounding her establishment is safe, especially when Trax is open.
"When we're open it's very safe because our flood lights are on and our security is aware of what's going on inside and outside," Murphy said.
But Trax is closed on Mondays, so anyone walking alone in the area should use added caution, she said.
"You should always keep on guard," she added. "There are certain things that especially females need to do" to be safe.
