Police to arrest man for Alderman theft

University Police have come one step closer to apprehending the suspect responsible for the Tuesday night burglaries of six University buildings.

"A main suspect has been identified, and three felony warrants have been obtained for him," University Police Chief Michael Sheffield said.

Police responded to a report of attempted burglary at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, which was filed by Books Arts Prof. Terry Belanger, who was working in the basement of Alderman Library.

Although two warrants for breaking and entering and another for possession of burglary tools have been obtained, University Police have yet to connect them to the individual buildings vandalized.

Those buildings include Alderman Library, Clark Hall, Cobb Hall, Levering Hall, Memorial Gymnasium and New Cabell Hall.

Sheffield said he hopes that an arrest will be made for the non-student suspect as early as this morning.

In all, over $350 worth of property was reported stolen in the incidents and about $325 worth of property damage was suffered because of Tuesday night's vandalism and burglaries.

The majority of the damage was done to the window glass and panes of the buildings, University Police Lt. Mike Abbott said.

Items such as students' books and backpacks and clothes also were stolen from Memorial Gymnasium that evening.

Police said they believe there is a possibility that there were multiple perpetrators involved in Tuesday night's crimes.

"We probably think that the individual is related to all of" the break-ins, Sheffield said. "But as the investigation continues we may find out that more people are involved. At this point we can't say for sure that it was one person."

Police did not release any further information about the suspect because of fears he might flee the area if his identity is revealed.

Belanger said he is pleased with the manner in which the investigation is being handled.

"The University Police are handling this in a terrific fashion, and it is very gratifying to think that closure will be provided to this case," he said.
