The Virginia field hockey team will begin its NCAA Tournament run against longtime rival Old Dominion Saturday at College Park, Md.
The Cavaliers and Monarchs have bumped heads in the tourney several times. Saturday's game will mark the third consecutive year the squads have met in the NCAAs, and the sixth overall Tournament meeting between the two. Old Dominion has won all six contests.
Earlier this season the Monarchs defeated Virginia 3-2 in overtime Sept. 26.
The winner of the game will face either Maryland or Lafayette in the second round.
Triple-Double your pleasure
Mary Frances Scott registered a triple double - 10 kills, 14 digs and a match-high 65 assists - as the Virginia volleyball team downed N.C. State 3-1 Tuesday in Raleigh.
The four-game win (15-7, 5-15, 15-5, 15-9) snapped a three-match losing streak for the Cavaliers.
Not only was Tuesday's effort Scott's first career triple-double, but she also moved into second place on the ACC all-time assist list, with a grand total of 5,766 assists during her four years as starting setter. That total is also good for 20th on the NCAA career assist list.
Andrea Fischer and Deanna Zwarich led the way on the attack, finishing with 19 and 18 kills, respectively.
Holland touts Jones as Heisman candidate
The Thomas Jones for Heisman campaign has added Virginia Athletic Director Terry Holland to its group of supporters. Holland outlined his reasons for support in a letter published on the ACC's official Web site.
"During my 40 years in intercollegiate athletics ... there is no individual during all that time who epitomizes the term student-athlete as well as U.Va. football player Thomas Jones," he wrote.
Holland goes on to list Jones's qualifications for the Heisman, but qualified his remarks by stating he only was supplying information about Jones's accomplishments.
"The Heisman should not be a beauty contest and just as Thomas Jones' accomplishments in the classroom and in other areas should not get him your vote, neither should other candidates' previous notoriety get them the vote for this season's Heisman," Holland wrote.
Jones currently leads the nation in rushing yards per game.
Clemson signs four new Tigers
The first day of the men's basketball early signing period was a busy one for Clemson Coach Larry Shyatt. The school's Athletic Media Relations Department announced yesterday that four high school recruits had signed to play for the Tigers next season.
Wing forward De'on Dixon (High Point, N.C.), power forward Chris Hobbs (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and guards Dwon Clifton (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Tony Stockton (Medina, Ohio) all made official commitments.
