Scuffle breaks out at St. Anthony Hall

Violence erupted early Friday morning at St. Anthony Hall when a brother was physically assaulted during a party.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m., Charlottesville Police Sgt. Jimmy Pace said.

Pace said members of the Hall were trying to control the party, and they removed fourth-year Engineering student Thomas Martin from the house.

He said Martin then returned to the house and assaulted one of the brothers.

He added that one of the brothers then called the police, and the police later arrested Martin at the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house on Madison Lane.

Martin was charged with assault and battery.

Pace said Martin was covered in blood when arrested but refused medical assistance.

Martin declined to comment on the incident.

Martin is not a Phi Kappa Sigma brother.

Phi Kap President Trey Parker said Martin was "expelled" from the fraternity two years ago, but he declined to comment any further on the incident.

St. Anthony Hall President Britton Williston confirmed that police were called to the scene.

"Out of respect for the individual student who was arrested and because this is now a legal matter, I feel it is best not to comment in detail on the incident," Williston said in a statement.

Inter-Fraternity Council President Wes Kaupinen said he is concerned by any violence that occurs in fraternity houses.

"This kind of conduct in fraternity houses should not and will not be tolerated," Kaupinen said.

He said the IFC will investigate the incident, but he declined to comment on any specifics of the case.

Asst. Dean of Students Aaron Laushway said the Office of the Dean of Students investigates nearly all incidents when students are arrested.

"When we learn of an assault and especially one in which there was an arrest, we certainly want to talk to the individuals involved," Laushway said.

He said any assault serious enough to draw criminal charges also could bring University Judiciary Committee charges.

About an hour before the assault, witnesses said members of two secret societies, the Eli Bananas and the T.I.L.K.A.'s, "tapped" new members at St. Anthony Hall.

But several witnesses said it did not appear as if the incidents were related.

"Overall, there was a jovial, friendly atmosphere prevalent among the members and initiates ... no particular group, fraternity or society for that matter, was responsible for the incident that occurred," Williston said in his statement.
