Students plan

Alcohol Awareness Week kicks off Sunday with the A Capella Sing in Newcomb Plaza. The weeklong program will combine workshops and community events to promote alcohol awareness at the University. For the past month the Institute for Substance Abuse Studies has brought together over 15 different student and administrative organizations to plan next week's events.

"I am most excited about the incredible student energy and creativity that has gone into the planning of these different events," Dean of Students Penny Rue said.

Nationally, Alcohol Awareness Week takes place in October but the Institute for Substance Abuse Studies always holds the University's Alcohol Awareness Week during the week before the last home football game - traditionally when some fourth-year students attempt to drink a fifth of alcohol, Institute Director Alison Houser said.

One highlight of the week is a pledge drive sponsored by the new group, Fourth Years for Ending Stupid Traditions. Through the program, students sign a pledge stating they will not drink a "fourth-year fifth." The pledge drive was begun last year by then-Fourth-Year Class President Leah Freidman in an attempt to keep fourth years from drinking the fourth-year fifth. FEST members said they hope to continue the "Kick the Fifth" program in their effort to end dangerous student rituals.

"Only about 7 percent of the fourth-year class has participated in the fourth-year fifth" in recent years, said Luke Mitchell, class trustee and FEST member. "We are hoping to make that number drop this year."

The Peer Health Educators are holding a Fourth-Year 5K Run at 8 a.m. Nov. 13, the morning of the last home football game against Buffalo. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Leslie Baltz scholarship fund. Leslie Baltz was a fourth-year University student who died in November 1997 after consuming a large amount of alcohol and falling down stairs in a friend's apartment.
