Two new counselors

After several months of scrutiny on the University's use of race in admissions, the Office of Admissions is redoubling its efforts to increase minority recruitment to the University by hiring two new admissions counselors.

The counselors have been hired to run the new Outreach subsection of the Admissions Office under the supervision of Valerie Gregory, associate dean and director of minority recruiting.

Carolyn Halloway, a 1998 graduate of North Carolina State University and Ryan Hargraves, a 1998 University alumnus, will "intensify efforts in minority recruiting," Assoc. Dean of Admissions Linda Miller said.

Hargraves said he will emphasize personal interaction and follow up. He believes Outreach "will help the current state of affairs" in the Office of Admissions, following highly publicized debate over the role of race in the admissions process.

"Right now, [minority students] may not want to go to U.Va., they may want to go to historically black colleges and universities. The Outreach program should help alleviate some of these perceptions," he said.

The admissions counselors will visit high schools and civic organizations throughout the nation to recruit minority students who may not otherwise consider applying to the University, Miller said.

The new Outreach program "should help the admissions process," University President John T. Casteen III said.

Funding for the Outreach program, along with a summer program that will encourage minority high school and middle school students to consider the University, was designated in the Board of Visitors' 2000-2002 Biennial Budget and Strategic Plan, dated Oct. 16. A final version of the budget will be submitted to Gov. James S. Gilmore III (R) Nov. 30.

According to the October report, the Outreach program and the summer program together will receive $583,512 in the first year and $751,067 in the second, if approved by the Governor.

Halloway could not be reached for comment.

Both Halloway and Ryan have experience recruiting minority students. Halloway worked with the N.C. State Office of Admissions, New Student Orientation and the Office of African-American Affairs. Hargraves was the program coordinator for the University's Residence Life and served on the Black Student Admissions Committee and Student Council.
