U-Police, administrators declare victory over 'fifth'

As the football team triumphed over Buffalo this weekend, the police and administration celebrated a victory of their own over the fourth-year fifth, a tradition where fourth years attempt to drink a fifth of liquor by the end of the last home game.

According to University Police, one student was arrested and eight students were handed alcohol-related citations Saturday, which usually result in an ejection from the game. Last year, however, one student was arrested and 34 students were ejected from the final home game.

"I believe that there is a great improvement over alcohol-related incidents this year as compared to last year," University Police Capt. Michael Coleman said.

Coleman attributed part of this year's success in reducing the effects of the fourth-year fifth to student intervention.

"Many student groups helped to make others aware of the dangers. Whenever you get the correct information out, people tend to act responsibly," he said.

Dean of Students Penny Rue also commended student groups for their efforts to stop the tradition.

"This weekend has reinforced my belief that student involvement is the key. The administration is not particularly useful in stopping drinking because students tend not to listen. But they listen to their peers, their friends," Rue said.

Peer Health Educators held a 5K run Saturday morning before the game, while a student group, Fourth Years Ending Stupid Traditions, handed out pledge cards, allowing students to win prizes in exchange for not drinking.
