University appoints Willy to vacated post

The University has filled the position of assistant to the vice president for student affairs -- a job that had remained vacant since mid-August.

Lori Willy, who previously worked in the Office of the Registrar during her 12-year tenure at the University, began work Monday as the replacement for H. Sam Miller, who left the University in August.

Miller is now the assistant vice chancellor for student affairs and interim director of campus activities at the University of Connecticut.

Willy said she worked with many of the University's computer systems while in the Registrar's Office, and is familiar with programs such as ISIS and PACE, the University's system for keeping student records.

Willy said she is pleased to be moving into the student affairs sector of the University.

"I think it is most important to enhance the student-empowering culture" at the University, she said.

Willy also worked from Oct. 1998 through April 1999 as an administrative intern in the Office of Student Affairs.

She said during that time she worked with many University programs, such as the implementation of the Student Orientation Leader positions and the development of the parental notification alcohol policy.

William W. Harmon, vice president for student affairs, said Willy brings some "unique skills" to the position -- particularly her skills with technology and computers.

Harmon said there were 30 applicants for the job and that pool was then narrowed to four finalists -- two from inside the University and two from outside.

The search committee was looking for someone who would be able to smoothly enter the position in the middle of the school year, he said.

He added that Willy's main responsibilities will include over-seeing the Student Council Appropriations process, which provides funding for student groups, working on the weekly Connections e-mail, and providing "general support" for the office.

Student Activities Business Manager William Hancher said he hopes Willy's transition period will be smooth, although it is "too early to say how the transition" from Miller to Willy will go.

Hancher praised Willy's commitment to student affairs work.

"I'm definitely pleased with the choice," he said. "She's a good person for the job and I think the students will like her."

John Finley, Student Council chief financial officer, said while he has not yet met Willy, he has heard encouraging things about her.

"I heard that she was very nice," Finley said.

He said Willy's computer expertise will be an added benefit to having her in the position.
