Funds hit new high as efforts continue

According to figures released yesterday, 1999 was a very good year for the University's Capital Campaign.

The Campaign, as recorded until the end of the last fiscal year, reached a total of $1.084 billion. In December alone, the Campaign raised almost $100 million, which included a $62 million gift to the Darden School from Frank Batten, Sr.

"December was definitely the Campaign's best month to date. However, even without [Batten's] gift, we still raised over $37 million in gifts and pledges," Director of Development Communications Bill Sublette said.

The University reached its Campaign goal a year ahead of schedule. But reaching this goal has not stopped the University's fundraising process.

"We've definitely gone above and beyond" the original goal, Sublette said. "However, the scheduled date to end is Dec. 31 of this year, and we plan to continue with the Campaign until that time."

The Campaign's success has set the University apart from other institutions of higher education that do not carry out extensive fundraising.

"We are one of only 20 schools around the world who has attempted a campaign of this magnitude," Vice President for Development Robert Sweeney said.

"Now we are only one of 12 to 14 schools who have actually reached that goal. This truly sets the University apart," Sweeney said.

The Campaign is split into 17 separate categories, each of which does its own fundraising. The categories include all University schools, as well as athletics, the Bayly Art Museum, the Jefferson Scholars Program and others.

The amount raised differs from school to school. For example, the Medical School has raised over $190 million, whereas the Architecture School has raised less than $7 million.

"We must continue the Campaign because some areas of the University still have many unmet needs," Sweeney said.

Some of the unmet needs he mentioned include building a new storage center for the University's Special Collections library and sponsoring more scholarships and professorships for both the Architecture and Education Schools.

"Even though we have reached our goal, the campaign is not over," said Charles Fitzgerald, associate vice president and director of development.

The Capital Campaign officially ends Jan. 1, 2001, but this date does not mark the end of the University's fundraising efforts.
