IFC selects Saunders as new president

The Inter-Fraternity Council elected its 2000-2001 executive board last night, naming third-year Kappa Alpha fraternity member Justin Saunders president.

Saunders said he hopes to focus the IFC's attention on rush next year.

"We want to improve formal rush so that we can increase our numbers for next year," he said.

He added that the IFC will continue to advocate the return of formal rush to the fall.

Another Kappa Alpha member, second year Josh Johnson, was chosen as vice president for party patrol.

Johnson said the IFC's self-regulation of parties has been working very well. "The system we have is excellent," he said. He added that he wants to continue to improve party patrol by "starting a new education program that's more conducive to the whole fraternity system." He also plans to hold party patrol committee meetings on a more regular basis.

The IFC elected third-year Delta Kappa Epsilon member Tim Roscoe as educator. Roscoe said he will "work towards eliminating the negative stereotype of the Greek system." He said he will work with other student groups on Grounds to develop a positive image. He added that he wants to "redefine our concepts of solidarity beyond individual houses."

Third-year Phi Kappa Psi member Kirk Hurme was elected secretary/treasurer. Hurme said he will "ensure that the Greek system is fiscally sound."

He said he also might serve as an advisor to houses having financial problems as a result of deferred rush.

Third-year Sigma Nu member Wes Bieligk will be the IFC rush chairman. His main goal is to increase the number of students participating in rush.

"There's a frat for every guy out there and I want to get that message across," Bieligk said.

IFC President Wes Kaupinen said many strong candidates ran for positions.

"The elections were very competitive this year," Kaupinen said.

Saunders, Johnson, Roscoe and Bieligk all served on the executive board last year as well.

"I'm very encouraged by the tremendous experience that's returning to the IFC. At the same time, we're bringing on a couple of passionate new leaders," Kaupinen said.

He said he hopes the new executives will continue to uphold the ideals of the IFC.

"We made some tremendous progress in the last year," he added. "In particular, the IFCJC and the party patrol solidified themselves as strong and efficient governing bodies."

The new executives will take office March 1.
