New 'Lawnies' receive notices, congratulations

Yesterday the Lawn Selection Committee sent 48 acceptance letters to the future Lawn residents for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Two hundred and fifty students who will graduate from the University in the spring of 2001 applied for the available Lawn rooms.

Third-year College student Sunit Shah received his acceptance letter yesterday morning.

"It is a great honor and privilege to live on the Lawn," Shah said. He said living on the Lawn would be exciting because of all the student leaders living there. Shah participates in a variety of organizations on Grounds including Resident Staff, the University Judiciary Committee and the International Relations Organization, as well as volunteering as a tutor.

The Lawn Selection Committee is chosen by the Steering Committee, which is composed of four administrators and 10 students. The Steering Committee chooses 25 fourth-year students to serve with the 10 student members of the Steering Committee to select the new Lawn residents.

Student Council President Taz Turner was one of the 35 students on the Lawn Selection Committee. Turner said he was looking for someone sincere about wanting to live on the Lawn.

Third-year College student Jonathan Bertsch was one of the 202 not asked to live on the Lawn.

"At first, I was disappointed, but I realized I couldn't be because I had done my best on the application, and everything works out for the best," Bertsch said.

Not all accepted students have received their letters yet.
