    Men's basketball ACColades

The ACC handed out its men's basketball weekly honors yesterday, much to the dismay of Virginia fans.

Maryland center Lonny Baxter, who dominated the Cavaliers in the paint in a 91-79 Terp win Wednesday, was named Player of the Week. Jason Williams, the freshman point guard who guided Duke to a 106-86 win against the Cavs Saturday, took home the Rookie of the Week award.

Baxter had 24 points and eight rebounds for No. 25 Maryland against Virginia, outplaying Cav first-year big man Travis Watson. He followed that performance with 31 points, 10 boards and a career-high seven blocks in Maryland's win against N.C. State Sunday.

Williams earned his second Rookie of the Week nod by helping the Blue Devils extend their ACC winning streak to 31 games. Against Virginia, the rookie floor general tied the Duke single game record with 13 assists and chipped in 13 points.

Thursday at North Carolina, Williams contributed 12 points, distributed six assists and plucked three steals in the Devils' overtime win.

    Tiger on the prowl

After coming off the bench for 39 points in two Clemson victories last week, 5-foot-9 guard Chrissy Floyd snagged the women's ACC Rookie of the Week award yesterday.

Floyd pumped in a game-high 22 points in Clemson's 72-43 home win against Georgia Tech Jan. 31 and notched 17 Sunday as the Lady Tigers edged Maryland 59-57.

    Tracking success

Raymond Weeden, a 1999 Virginia graduate, finished fifth in the mile at the New Balance Games Sunday with a personal best of 4:05.05 - just four seconds off the winning time - at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
