Anonymous donor gives $1 million Nursing gift

With an anonymous $1 million gift lining its pocket, the University's Nursing School will be able to recruit a new faculty member with expertise in the field of pediatric nursing.

The gift, which will establish a distinguished professorship, sets a new mark as the largest gift to the Nursing School from an individual donor and will be the first $1 million professorship to go before the Board of Visitors, which approves all new funded professorships.

"The named professorship allows us to attract faculty members who have done prominent research in the area" and are often known nationally and internationally, Assoc. Nursing Dean Doris Greiner said. The gift will help attract an expert in the field of pediatric nursing by enhancing the state salary.

With the Nursing School's 1999 U.S. News & World Report ranking jumping three places to No. 21, Greiner said the professorship has positive implications for the School's future recognition.

"It can certainly help us in enhanced reputation," and by attracting students whose interest in pediatrics is complemented by the new faculty member, she said.

The Nursing School learned of the donation at an April 3 faculty meeting. Karen Ratzlaff, coordinator of donor and media relations, said the creation of the professorship reflects the donor's goals for the gift.

The donation "sets a new standard for development for the Nursing School," Ratzlaff said, adding that the money will allow for many projects that would not have been possible otherwise.

The professorship likely will influence clinical application, education of Nursing School students and research in pediatric nursing.

Ratzlaff noted the timeliness of the donation, which comes as several faculty members are leaving the Nursing School's pediatrics department. She expressed gratitude for the gift and for "someone who believes so strongly in nursing education."

Greiner called the gift "a wonderful thing for the school ... gratitude is what we all feel."
