Committee selects four dean finalists

A search committee has narrowed the candidate pool for an open assistant dean of students position to four women. It hopes to recommend one candidate before exams begin to Dean of Students Penny Rue, who will make the final decision.

Two of the candidates had on-Grounds interviews and tours Wednesday and Thursday, and two will be here next week.

All of the candidates hail from colleges west of the Mississippi River. Katie Bryant is the assistant director of resident life at the University of Oregon. Jennifer Turner is the resident hall director at Colorado College, and Beth Hellwig-Olson is the director of student life at the University of Colorado. Rozana Carducci is the leadership development coordinator for resident life at the University of Missouri.

Assoc. Dean of Students V. Shamim Sisson, who heads the selection committee, said "all four [candidates] had strong combinations of experience and knowledge particularly relevant to this position."

The new assistant dean is scheduled to replace Michelle A. Samuels July 1. Samuels said she is relocating to the New Jersey/New York area after spending 11 years at the University so she may advance professionally and be closer to her family.

The selection committee, which has been searching for a replacement since the beginning of February, is composed of four students and six University staff members.

Sisson said the committee received about 50 applications and narrowed the group to four finalists in two or three stages based on application materials, telephone interviews and conversations with references.

She said the candidates interview with various groups of students and representatives of the Office of the Dean of Students during their visits to Grounds.

The search committee then will gather the observations of the interviewers and deliberate before deciding on one applicant to recommend to Rue.
