Construction relocates several Rotunda offices

Some University officials will be packing up and temporarily moving out of the Rotunda at the end of the semester.

Some offices, including the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, will relocate for about six months while construction is done on the Rotunda, where the offices currently are housed.

The main focus of the construction project will be to replace the slate that currently covers the terrace above the Rotunda offices with a more protective, waterproof foundation.

Other officials, such as Board of Visitors Secretary Alexander "Sandy" Gilliam, said they intend to remain in their offices unless the noise and disruption prove to be too much of a hassle.

"I'd almost do anything rather than move," Gilliam joked.

He said some offices have a great deal of water dripping, but the situation in his office is not as bad.

In addition to replacing the Rotunda portico, workers will be installing a ramp on the west side of the Lawn entrance to the Rotunda and replacing the Lawn sprinkler system.

William W. Harmon, vice president for student affairs, confirmed his offices will be moving to the basement of Madison House - the student community service organization located on Rugby Road - once construction begins.

"Out of all places we explored, Madison House is the best option at this time," Harmon said.

Madison House Executive Director Cindy Fredrick said the space is rented to the University and she was not aware of what the University plans to do with it.

Harmon said there has been a problem with water seeping into his offices for the past three or four years.

He said he thinks the change will not be detrimental to his office's relationship with University students.

The move "places us in an area where we will continue to be able to support students," he added. "I don't think it would be too difficult for students to find" the office.

University Architect Samuel "Pete" Anderson said the work that will begin in June is only the first phase of a project that is expected to take several years to complete.

In the summer of 2001 the area over Gilliam's office will be replaced, in 2002 the area over the Office of Development will be replaced, and in the summer of 2003 the area over Anderson's office will be redone.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin June 5, and the first phase is slated to be completed by Sept. 27. Occupants are not sure when they will return to their offices.
