McPheeters to increase FSC's visibility

In a closed-door meeting last night, members of the Fraternity-Sorority Council elected third-year College student Michael McPheeters as their organization's president for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Third-year College student Sakwa Bunyasi will serve as FSC vice president.

FSC will hold elections for other positions next Tuesday.

The FSC is the umbrella fraternal organization for fraternities and sororities that do not fall under the auspices of the Black Fraternal Council, the Inter-Fraternity Council or the Inter-Sorority Council.

The FSC was founded in September, shortly after the University formally entered into a relationship with alpha Kappa Delta Phi, a sorority with mostly Asian and Asian-American members.

FSC executives include two representatives each from BFC, IFC and ISC.

Currently, alpha Kappa Delta Phi, Omega Phi Beta, a Latina sorority, and Lambda Upsilon Lambda, a Latino-oriented fraternity, are members of FSC.

McPheeters, the current BFC president, said FSC has lacked strong leadership in the past.

FSC needs "a strong leader in the future" to increase on-Grounds awareness of the FSC and its objectives.

He said he plans to educate the University community about FSC in an effort to make the organization more visible to students on Grounds.

The FSC "has not received the respect and the reverence it deserves," he added.

The FSC has a unique opportunity to educate the University community about issues that are important to minority groups, McPheeters said.

He also said he plans to introduce service projects that will broaden the FSC's activities and involve the organization more directly with members of the community outside the University.

Buyasi, a member of the Lambda Upsilon Lambda House Council, said he "plans on being a voice of the FSC."

He said he wants to increase the organization's visibility to students and impact on Grounds.

"I intend to work closely with the BFC, ISC and IFC to establish the FSC" as an organization with more influence on students and the University community, he added.
