Jenifer commits to men's hoops

Pete Gillen can now scratch one of five available scholarships for 2001-02 off his list.

Virginia received its first commitment for 2001-02 Tuesday when Keith Jenifer of Towson Catholic School in Baltimore informed the men's basketball program that he will join the Cavalier family.

Jenifer, a two-time member of The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro first team, averaged 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals in 1999-2000. Before he becomes a Cav, the 6-foot-3, 160-pound point guard will attend Hargrave Military Academy for a fifth year of high school.

Cavaliers compete in U.S. Trials

Michael Johnson or Marion Jones may hold track and field world records, but don't let them steal the attention.

Last weekend, rising sophomore Inge Jorgensen finished 14th in the javelin competition with a throw of 49.62 meters, her second-best of the year. Also competing was 1999 graduate Ann Crouse. Her throw of 51.66 was good enough to qualify her for Monday's finals, where she placed 11th.

Brian Kollar, a rising junior who took second at the 2000 NCAA Championships in the javelin after winning the ACC title, qualified for the finals Tuesday with a throw of 71.47. The finals will take place tonight.
