Grounds Invasion

Forget Napster ... Bring on MTV's Campus Invasion!

MTV continued its fifth annual Campus Invasion tour yesterday when it hit the University - one of 23 college campuses (er, Grounds) it will besiege within the next month.

The tour transformed the northern end of the Mad Bowl into a personal Interactive Village, with six themed tents in which students could "see, feel and touch MTV," said Brooke Butler, the MTV representative in charge of Campus Invasion.

"I think it is great that MTV decided to come here," second-year College student Jenn Friedman said. "It makes you feel a part of a larger city than Charlottesville."

With a dizzying array of stuff to play with, students were able to get up close and personal with MTV.

Under one tent, students found user-friendly guitars and drums ready for jamming to their favorite tunes and brand new audio technology that allowed them to create their own song remixes. Under other tents, students queued up for temporary airbrushed tattoos, embarked on virtual tours of MTV's Times Square Studios, and voted for their favorite songs of all time.

"I loved the tent where you could make your own music and play your own beat," fourth-year College student Dana Willis said. "I have just fulfilled my dream of being a disc-jockey - watch out!"

Before their onscreen debuts, students visited the Neutrogena area where they learned how to look their best. Stylists advised students on skin care and protection from the sun and pampered visitors with free healthy skin-care samples.

"This is the best interaction with the consumer," Neutrogena public relations representative Ashley Dunn said. "It is very valuable to find out what students want in our products and to be able to educate the masses about sun protection."

The afternoon's fun was just a preview, however, for what followed.

Beginning at 8 p.m., the headlining performer for MTV's Campus Invasion, Wyclef Jean, along with groups De La Soul and Black Eyed Peas, took to the stage at University Hall for over 2,000 spectators.

"It is about time we got a major entertainment company here to get the spirit up at U.Va.," Willis said. "We haven't seen anything like this since the Fugees came in 1996"
