Men finish ninth in 18-team Duke Golf Classic

The Virginia men's golf team, led by senior Cameron Yancey, finished in ninth place at the Duke Golf Classic in Durham, N.C. yesterday. Yancey totaled a 1-over total of 217, good for seventh place individually.

The Cavaliers completed the three-round competition with a 38-over 902 on the Duke Golf Club course. N.C. State shot a 12-over 876 to clinch the title. Augusta State and Duke scored 880 to tie for second place.

Virginia returns to the greens next on Oct. 23 and 24 in the East Regional Preview in Williamsburg.

Ahead of the field

Sophomore runner Justin Wood led the field and the Cavs as the Virginia men's cross country team won the Tribe Open Saturday in Williamsburg. Wood captured top honors, racing to the finish line three minutes ahead of Isidro Pimentel of Georgetown, the second-place finisher.

Cav sophomore Matt Ruhl rounded out the top three for the Cavaliers. Virginia freshmen Walton Kingsberry and Andrew Filacheck and senior Ryan Webb also placed in the top 10, finishing fifth, eighth and ninth respectively.

By placing five in the top 10, the Cavaliers scored an impressive 26 place points to win the 10-team meet. The Cavs finished ahead of host team William & Mary, which scored a 53. Georgetown finished a distant third with 101.

    Running through hoops

In the ESPN.com and Sportsline.com preseason top 25 college basketball polls, five ACC teams received spots in the rankings.

Both polls placed Duke in the No. 2 slot, just behind Arizona. The Wildcats return five All-Americans, including center Loren Woods, who has been cleared to return to action after injuring his back last season.

North Carolina, after its impressive Final Four appearance last season, rests at the No. 3 spot in the Sportline.com rankings. However, in the ESPN.com poll, the Tar Heels lie at No. 9. Maryland, behind forward Terence Morris and guard Juan Dixon, worked their way up to earn spots in the top 10 in both polls, placing fifth in the ESPN.com poll and eighth in the Sportline.com poll. Wake Forest took the 24th and 21st spot in the ESPN.com and Sportsline.com preseason rankings, respectively.

Rounding out the ACC, Virginia squeezed into the rankings at No. 16 in the Sportsline.com poll, but was denied top-25 status by ESPN.com.

    Weinke rolls on

If Chris Weinke keeps up this pace, the ACC will have to engrave his name on its weekly award. For the third straight week, the conference honored Weinke as its ACC Offensive Back of the Week.

Just seven days removed from throwing for a career-high 496 yards in a 27-24 loss to Miami, Weinke did even better Saturday against Duke. He burned the Blue Devils for five touchdowns and 536 yards, a Florida State record.

Clemson linebacker Chad Carson and cornerback Alex Ardley won the defensive lineman and defensive back awards, respectively. Georgia Tech lineman Chris Brown, Duke punt returner Ronnie Hamilton and N.C. State freshman quarterback Philip Rivers also received awards.
