Men's basketball lands commitment from Clark

With guards Jermaine Harper and Keith Jenifer already on board for the 2001-02 season, the Virginia men's basketball program received a third verbal commitment yesterday when Jason Clark announced his intention to wear the orange and blue.

"I felt Virginia was the best place for me," Clark told recruiting Web site InsidersReport.com. "I had some great schools on my list but I feel my style will fit in there perfectly."

Clark, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound combo forward prepping at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., chose the Cavaliers over Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion and Florida State. The Vols were the runners-up.

Clark visited Virginia three weeks ago and had what Hargrave coach Kevin Keatts termed a "great visit."

  • The Cavs received a commitment 10 days ago from Harper, a 6-3, 180-pound combo guard. Jenifer, a 6-3, 160-pound point guard who will play with Clark this season at Hargrave, agreed in July to sign with Virginia.

    Kickin' it

Giving up evidently is not an option for the Virginia men's soccer team.

Yesterday at Clemson, the No. 15 Cavaliers trailed the No. 9 Tigers by a goal at the half before scoring twice to claim a come-from-behind 3-2 win.

Clemson's Fabio Tambosi and Ricky Lewis scored for the Tigers (8-3-1, 1-3 ACC) in the first half, while Ryan Gibbs also tallied a goal for Virginia (9-3-1, 4-0). Lewis' score right before the end of the half gave Clemson a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room.

But Cav freshman forward Alecko Eskandarian and sophomore midfielder Kenny Arena scored in the 72nd and 76th minutes, respectively, to lead the Cavaliers past the Tigers.

    Shelled by the Terps

Despite a match-high 25 kills from senior middle blocker Deanna Zwarich, the Virginia women's volleyball team fell at Maryland Friday. With the 3-1 loss to the Terps (15-3, 17-15, 14-16, 15-12), the Cavaliers drop below .500 overall at 9-10 (4-4 ACC).

Zwarich hit .429 in the loss and added a match-high five blocks. Cav junior utility player Jenny Harmon registered 12 kills. Freshman outside hitter Paige Davis tallied her seventh consecutive double-double with 19 digs and 12 kills. Freshman setter Abby Whittenburg had 50 assists and nine digs in the match.

The Cavs' road trip takes them next to Chapel Hill, N.C., where they will take on North Carolina tomorrow.

    Vahaly comes up just short

Senior tennis player Brian Vahaly reached the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men's All-American Championships this weekend, but lost to J.P. Fruttero of California Saturday.

Vahaly, the tournament's top seed, defeated 15th-seeded Adam Carey of Tennessee to advance to the quarterfinals match. He lost to the unseeded Fruttero in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). Vahaly's loss ended his bid to advance to the singles final of his second consecutive ITA Grand Slam event. He lost in the final of the National Clay Courts Championships last month.

In doubles play Saturday, Vahaly and fellow Cavalier senior Huntley Montgomery reached the finals before succumbing to Florida's Oliver Leva nt and Nathan Overholser (6-4, 7-5). Vahaly and Montgomery were the tournament's seventh-seeded doubles team.

Montgomery, who lost his first-round singles match to Georgia's Travis Parrott, was eliminated in the first round of the consolation draw by Esteban Carril of TCU.

    Quaking in their boots

With a 4-3 victory over Penn, the Virginia women's tennis team seized the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division I Invitational Tennis Championship yesterday in Princeton, N.J.

The Cavaliers captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Virginia senior Christie Schweer and sophomore Henriette Williams defeated Rochelle Raiss and Sanela Kunovac, 8-5. At No. 3, senior Kelly Weaver and sophomore Jennifer Tuchband beat Louani Bascara and Shubha Srinivasan, 8-4.

The Cavs clinched the match by winning three of the six singles matches. Williams defeated Srinivasan at No. 2, freshman Laura James beat Raiss at No. 5 and Weaver outlasted Jolene Sloat at No. 6.
