Officials request Medical building

Facing a Medical School space crunch, the University plans to ask Gov. James S. Gilmore III (R) for $25 million to go toward construction of a new medical research building.

The new facility would be built next to another medical research building on Lane Road behind the University Medical Center. It would house research in eight areas, including allergies, pediatrics and infectious diseases.

The Medical School does not have enough research space, said Charles M. Caravati, Jr., chairman of the Health Affairs Committee of the Board of Visitors.

Without this necessary space, the University will have trouble both retaining and attracting top medical faculty and maintaining a top-notch medical program, Caravati said.

He said he thought funding the new medical research building is the "number one capital priority of the University."

Many at the University believe the new building is the "single most important thing" needed to improve the Medical School, he added.

Without the new space, the University may stop getting more national research funding, said Dr. Jules Levine, associate vice president of the Health System.

Even now, Levine said the University is having trouble accommodating its current research projects.

He said he does not believe the large request for funding of the new medical building will affect the possibility of state funding for other University areas.

"We're asking for what we need to continue to be the best public university," he said. "We hope the governor and the legislature will agree with us and find a way to come up with the funds."

The full Board of Visitors agreed to request the funding during a conference call Monday morning.

The University has put in a request for the funding with the Governor's office. If Gilmore approves the request, it will go to the General Assembly for approval.

The University has not yet decided if it will seek General Assembly support at a later time if Gilmore does not approve the proposal.
