Reynolds to take over as vice president

After 18 months of serving as interim vice president and chief information officer, Robert E. Reynolds will take over the position for good starting Nov. 1.

In the position, Reynolds assumes a dual role as a campus-wide planner for information technology and as an overseer of the technological infrastructure of the University.

In his interim position, Reynolds has been an "active person to understand the issues and help the University community grapple with them," said R.F. "Chip" German, Jr., ITC policy and planning director.

"News of his appointment has met with great enthusiasm on the part of people working with Information Technology and Communication across the University," German said.

Reynolds steps into his position with two major initiatives in front of him, University spokeswoman Louise Dudley said, including managing recommendations from the Virginia 2020 Science and Technology Commission. The Commission works to improve technology for research and work in the classroom and will replace the University's financial computing system in conjunction with the Integrated Systems Project.

Information technology also involves trying to stay ahead of the demand curve for bandwidth capacity so user requests do not exceed network capabilities, Reynolds said. ITC is also continuing to maintain its high standard for technology security and privacy issues and plans to launch a pilot for student portals so students can gear the University's Web site to their own needs and interests, he said.

Amy Cronin, chief of staff in the University President's Office, said Reynolds also will oversee "developments in technology that we can take advantage of to provide high quality education and service."

Reynolds initially served as interim vice president upon request by University President John T. Casteen III when previous vice president and chief information officer Polly McClure abruptly left the University for a new position.

"I'm quite honored and delighted to accept this information technology position for the University. I have enjoyed my past 18 months and look forward to its continuance," Reynolds said.
