Transfer students hoping to attend Virginia Tech this spring will need to make other plans for the semester. Because of increased enrollment this fall, spring undergraduate admissions applications will not be read.
"This is the second year in a row that we haven't been able to accept spring admissions," said Karen Torgersen, Virginia Tech's director of undergraduate admissions. "We've always had limited space for spring applicants, but it's gotten worse in recent years."
In addition to the increased numbers of freshmen enrolled at Virginia Tech, Torgersen attributed increased retention rates as another reason for the lack of space.
"More people are applying here, and out of those people, more are staying," Torgersen said.
Virginia Tech admissions officials foresaw this problem far before the Oct. 1 application deadline, she said. "We stopped accepting Internet applications a long time ago. We're still receiving applications by mail, and we're simply sending those right back," she added.
Potential students are being told to apply again for either summer classes or fall enrollment.
Virginia Tech plans each year for 25,000 students to enroll. Due to an increased number of fall applications this year, however, current enrollment is around 25,600.

"Our enrollment is limited by the number of classes we have, not due to housing or other factors," Torgersen said.
She cited several reasons for an increased interest in Virginia Tech, including a rise in its national ranking. "It also doesn't hurt to have a good football team," she added.
At the University, the College is the only undergraduate school that accepts spring applications.
"We've never experienced a problem with spring admissions like Tech because we don't encourage spring applications," Associate Dean of Admissions Larry Groves said. "I tell potential applicants to seriously consider waiting for the fall."
At the University, spring admissions are extremely competitive. Groves said only 25 students are admitted each spring from the 200 to 300 who apply.
