Yesterday at University Hall, it was "Welcome to the Marcie Dickson Show." With a game-high 21 points and two game-tying plays, Virginia's sophomore forward turned in a career performance against the Demon Deacons.
When the Cavaliers were down 61-58 with 8.7 seconds left in regulation, Dickson received an inbounds pass from Chelsea Whitaker and converted it into the three-point play that sent the game to overtime.
"I noticed no one was guarding me," Dickson said. "I made eye contact with Chelsea, and she threw me the ball."
Apparently, sending the game into the first extra period was not enough for Dickson. She repeated the feat by picking up a loose ball after Schuye LaRue's miss and hitting a long-jumper to tie the game at 69-69.
"When it looks like [Wake Forest] is going to win it, Marcie comes up with the ball and sticks that jumper," Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said. "That was just amazing."
With LaRue benched for the first half, Svetlana Volnaya on the bench most of the second half with foul trouble and Telisha Quarles struggling most of the game before fouling out, Dickson shattered her previous career high of 14 points, which was set Wednesday night against Florida State.

"I felt going in, you got Volnaya, you got Quarles, you got LaRue, but then Dickson steps up," Wake Forest coach Charlene Curtis said. "I thought Dickson was the difference in the game."
Having unsuccessfully recruited Dickson to be a Demon Deacon, Curtis was probably one of the few people not surprised by Dickson's point explosion.
"I think she was a sleeper coming out of high school, and Virginia found out about her," Curtis said. "They found out about her after we started recruiting her. I thought she had a tremendous amount of potential, and it's really starting to come out."
Appropriately, during the intermission between regulation and overtime, the Baha Men blared over the loudspeaker, begging the question: Who let Marcie Dickson out?
