Shake your stuff at free dance clinic

Got the middle-of-the-week blues?

Dance them off tonight with the Virginia Dance Company's spring workshop. The Company, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last spring, is holding a free workshop tonight in Slaughter Gymnasium, with a different style of dance featured every hour from 7 to 11 p.m.

The workshop is "for anyone who wants to dance," explained Dance Company member Melissa del Sol, a first-year College student who will teach ballet during the first hour-long session.

The next hour consists of jazz, followed by hip-hop from 9 to 10, and concluding with lyrical dance from 10 to 11.

Last fall's annual Dance Company workshop was so popular that the Company established this year's unprecedented spring workshop. The company members plan to teach each dance as well as participate in the classes.

The workshop is intended for dancers of all abilities and experience. Second-year College student and workshop hip-hop instructor Afiya Jones explained everyone is invited to attend, and the Company is "not going to judge anyone on their dancing abilities."

Del Sol concurred. "It's not supposed to intimidate anyone in any way," she said. "It's a way to get everyone to come together - a chance for all dancers to meet as one."

After an extremely well-received fall workshop replete with positive feedback, the Virginia Dance Company is ready and excited for a successful repeat.

"It should be a lot of fun," Jones said.
