Dave to play hometown April 21

After months of negotiations, the Dave Matthews Band announced today that it will open its summer tour with a performance at Scott Stadium.

The Dave Matthews Band's Web site confirmed early this morning that the band will make its first 2001 tour appearance in its hometown of Charlottesville on Saturday, April 21.

The Band will be touring to promote its new album, "Everyday," to be released Feb. 27.

When the band approached the University about the feasibility of performing at the Scott Stadium two years ago, officials decided the venue was not an appropriate location for such a large event because the stadium expansion project had just begun, Executive Vice President Leonard W. Sandridge Jr. said.

The band resumed negotiations with the University after the project concluded in the fall of 2000.

"Our negotiations with the band have been going well," Sandridge said.

PK German, the University Programs Council committee that coordinates on-Grounds concerts, "would be thrilled to work with Dave Matthews," Chairman Jbeau Lewis said.

"I am thrilled that negotiations have gone so well to this point," he said.

Although the concert falls on the same date as PK German's annual Spring Fling concert featuring hip-hop and R&B artists, Lewis said the performances will not interfere with each other.

Tickets for the performance will go on sale March 3, but officials declined to comment on the nature of the ticket sale process.

Some University students believe it is more than appropriate for the Dave Matthews Band to begin its tour in the town where the band was founded in 1991.

"The fact that Dave Matthews went from playing frat houses here at U.Va. to Scott Stadium is a real tribute to the band," second-year College student Jared Cady said.

Cady said the concert will be like a "homecoming" for the band, especially for former University student and band violinist, Boyd Tinsley.

"It's amazing that Dave Matthews is opening the tour at Scott Stadium and returning to his Charlottesville roots," first-year Engineering student Ed Hallen said.
