LGBTU starts center, council

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Union is spearheading projects, including opening the Queer Resource Center and developing the Queer Leadership Council.

The Queer Resource Center opened last week in the Faculty Apartments on Rugby Road.

The resource center was open last fall once a week, but now it is open to the University community from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, LGBTU President Kate Ranson-Walsh said.

Students can find a library of books and movies as well as support at this "safe space," as organizers call it.

The center also serves as a place of referral for students looking for guidance or information on how to get more involved on Grounds, said Molly Moran, a first-year Education graduate student and the head intern at the resource center.

The LGBTU will offer many programming events through the center as well, such as a Speakers Bureau, Spring Out Week and Fun Queer Art Night.

The idea for a resource center first was proposed a few years ago, when concerned students brought a list of lesbian and gay programming requests to the Office of the Dean of Students.

Since then, Asst. Dean of Students Glenna C. Chang, the Office of the Dean of Students, LGBT Concerns Committee, and the Serpentine Society, an active gay alumni group, have been instrumental in overseeing the implimentation of the project, Moran said.

Along with the resource center, the new Queer Leadership Council focuses on facilitating communication between students. This coalition of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender student leaders will work together with other major student groups on Grounds, such as the Gay Christian group, Ranson-Walsh said.

The two new additions are a "result of the time and energy of staff, alumni and students," Moran said. "It's important not to be separate ... this is exciting and huge, a real step in the right direction."
