Replacement planned for O-Hill, Tree House

After scrapping plans to renovate Observatory Hill Dining Hall, the University is now working to construct an entirely new dining facility.

Once the new dining hall opens, both O-Hill and the Tree House snack bar will close, according to Richard Kovatch, asst. vice president for business operations.

University officials formed a study team with architects to solidify plans, but they do not know yet where the new facility will be located.

Construction should start about 18-24 months from now, Kovatch said.

Once a location is chosen, officials will decide if O-Hill will remain open during construction, Kovatch said.

Originally, officials planned to renovate O-Hill, but plans changed when bid prices from construction companies came in around 30 percent more than the University budget allowed.

Given the high bid price, officials felt they were better off with a new facility, Kovatch said.

"I believe [the new facility] will encompass many of the features we were envisioning for the renovated O-Hill," he added.

The new, larger building will include a resident dining facility and an "emporium," complete with a grocery store and retail outlets.

University officials said they are excited about what the new facility will offer students.

The dining hall will feature specialty stations similar to the Granary at Newcomb Dining Hall.

"A lot of preparation will be done right in front of students," Kovatch said. The changes will "take away some of the mystery that is going into" the student's meal.

Officials collaborated with student groups and traveled to other universities to ensure the building's retail outlets will offer what the students want to see, Director of Dining Services Edward Gutauskas said.

These requested outlets could include a pizzeria, deli and open space for people to congregate, Gutauskas said.

Many students said they agree a new dining hall is necessary.

"The [new facility is] a really good idea because [O-Hill is] always crowded," first-year College student Bernadette Goncz said. "More of the booths where they make your food would be good too."

Officials estimate the facility will open in fall 2004, Kovatch said.
