New video highlights arts around Grounds

Summer orientation will be spiced up this year with the addition of a student arts video produced by Student Council's Student Arts Committee.

The six-minute presentation will be viewed during the "Joining the U.Va. Community" portion of summer orientation.

"The arts hasn't received a lot of publicity for those coming into the University," said First-Year Council President Preston Lloyd, who has seen the film. "It is a good plug for something that hasn't received publicity."

The video presents scenes of various student arts performances, such as the Rotunda Sing, concerts, drama performances and the Arts Explosion.

"We want to get people excited about the arts," Reid said. "We're going to use the video to show people that the arts are an important and central part of the University experience."

Fourth-year College student Meredith Wright created, produced and directed the movie.

"I'm really interested in film making," Wright said. "I thought this would be a good way to get peoples' attention rather than a pamphlet."

"It is an excellent video of dance, drama and music performed by students at U.Va.," Director of Orientation Eleanor Sparagana said. "I was overwhelmed by the wonderful representation of students involved in the arts at U.Va."

The Committee was created in response to the Virginia 2020 Commission's call for a strengthening of arts programs at the University.
