LaRue wins season's top honor for women's hoops

The Virginia Sports Information Directors selected Schuye LaRaue as the Virginia women's basketball player of the year yesterday.

LaRue led the Cavaliers to an 18-14 record and NCAA tournament bid. She was Virginia's top scorer (18.1 points per game) and top rebounder (11.8). LaRue also led the nation in double-doubles with 23 during the season.

LaRue had 24 points and 11 rebounds in the Cavaliers NCAA Tournament overtime loss to Michigan, 81-71, on March 17.

As the Cavaliers only consistent player this season, LaRue set the record for rebounds by a sophomore with 379. She tied the school record of 20 rebounds in a game against University of California-Santa Barbara on Dec. 28.

LaRue had a season team-high 33 points against Hampton on Feb. 19.

In her freshman season, the 6-foot-3 Washington D.C. native won the ACC rookie of the year award and was named to second team All-ACC.

Other accolades LaRue has won this season include All-ACC first team honors and a finalist for ESPN The Magazine's power forward of the year.
