Pavilion X awarded to Commerce dean

Pavilion X soon will have a new resident. Commerce School Dean Carl P. Zeithaml will move into the historic pavilion this summer.

Zeithaml will replace Ernest Ern, the retired senior vice president for development who now lives in the residence at the south end of the East Lawn.

"I'm thrilled with the honor and opportunity that it presents for me and the school," Zeithaml said.

Zeithaml said he sees the Lawn as "the center of the University, and it symbolizes the values that are great about it."

The procedure to select pavilion residents is carried out by the Executive Committee of the Board of Visitors. A sub-committee chaired by Board Secretary Alexander G. "Sandy" Gilliam Jr. reviews the applications and makes a recommendation to the Executive Committee.

Zeithaml "had precedent because of his position as a dean," Gilliam said.

The Board also tried to select a pavilion resident that would be a good Lawn resident and be "involved with students who live on the Lawn," Gilliam said.

Zeithaml said he hopes to maintain the tradition of an open pavilion by inviting all students and alumni to visit his home at Pavilion X.

Pavilion X opened to residents in 1845. Zeithaml is excited and is anticipating moving into this historic location over the summer.

  • "We're pleased that the Zeithamls will be the next occupants," said Ern, who retired this year.

Ern and his family have resided in the historic Pavilion X for the past 12 years.

Ern said he plans to spend more time at his house on the coast of Maine, but he said Charlottesville and the University always will remain home for his family.

Ern and his wife also plan to stay active in the Charlottesville community.

Ern already has found a new past time and is busy working with the Jefferson Institute for Lifelong Learning, a program that provides education for senior citizens.

"I cannot think of any negative aspect of living" in Pavilion X, Ern said. "Every time I step out on the Lawn is like the first time."

Ern said he was honored to live in the pavilion. In its 12 years there, the Ern family allowed faculty and students to join it in Pavilion X during dinners and other events.

"It's a special experience walking to the Rotunda everyday from the Lawn," said Ern, who had a short walk to and from his Rotunda office.
