Softball finishes 2nd at Lady Vol Tournament

Virginia softball (37-11) beat Stephen F. Austin, 9-6, but fell, 3-1, to Tennessee on Sunday to take second at the Lady Vol Spring Invitational. Host Tennessee grabbed the tournament title.

Junior pitcher Kristen Dennis earned her 13th win of the season with 2.2 innings of relief work against the Lady Jacks.

Dennis shouldered the loss in the Cavaliers' second game against Tennessee on Sunday afternoon. Dennis threw a complete game and struck out 10 but gave up three runs on nine hits. The Cavaliers could only muster one run, a homer by Meaghan Young in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Dennis and freshmen Hannah Owings and Heather Field were named to the Lady Vol Spring Invitational Tournament team.

Cav Ruby Rojas earned ACC as well as Southern Atlantic Softball Alliance player of the week honors for her role in Virginia's second place tournament finish and 6-2 overall record for the week. Rojas boasts a .371 batting average and is on a nine-game hitting streak. She leads the Cavaliers with 40 runs, which ties the Virginia record for runs scored in a single season.

California rowing

The Virginia women's rowing team had a solid showing in the finals of the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday. Virginia's second varsity eight took second place, the first varsity eight finished third, and the novice eight placed fourth in their respective races.

Washington won the second varsity eight competition with a time of 7 minutes, 5.7 seconds. Virginia placed second in 7:07.7 and Washington State followed at third (7:12.1).

Southern California won the first varsity eight competition in 6:52.5, with Washington (6:53) and Virginia (7:06.7) rounding out the top three spots.

In the novice eight competition, Washington placed first (7:15.9), Washington State finished second (7:20.5), California-Berkeley was third (7:30.1), and Virginia followed 0.1 seconds behinds for a close fourth.

  • The Cavaliers also won four events and placed second in another at the Occoquan Sprints in Fairfax, Va., on Sunday. Virginia won both varsity four events and the varsity eight competition. The Cavalier novice boats also fared well. The novice four scored a come-from-behind win over George Mason, and the novice eight finished second to George Mason.

    Cavaliers tough at Duke Invitational

    Freshman Eliese Mitchell crushed her own hammer throw record by almost three meters this weekend at the Duke Invitational. Her 55.5-meter throw earned her sixth place in the event. Sophomore Bill Johnston missed his own hammer throw record by just 16 centimeters but grabbed third place. Junior Brian Kollar extended his winning streak with his third consecutive javelin title (71.28 meters). Junior John Welch placed behind Kollar with a toss of 66.2 meters.
