Student Council passes torch to incoming board

After a year of serving the University community, the 2000-1 Student Council executive board handed over the reigns to a new generation of student leaders.

Former Council President Joe Bilby, former Executive Vice President Matt Madden and former Vice President for Administration Stephen Wright all signed off at last night's Council meeting. Kelly Harris will serve a second term as vice president for organizations.

"It has been a tremendous honor to serve as Student Council president for the past 12 months," Bilby said.

Bilby outlined a list of projects the new executive board may want to keep working on for the next term.

These included continuing work on plans for the new student center project that has been several years in the making. Also, Bilby said he hopes funding can be provided so students can have premium seats at University Hall for basketball games.

Madden also noted several projects that he hopes to see Council continue in the upcoming term.

According to Madden, Council should continue to look at the first-year housing situation. Last month Council passed a resolution recommending that first years be allowed to continue choosing between McCormick Road and Alderman Road Residences. An original resolution had called for eliminating choice in an attempt to make the first-year housing areas more diverse.

But Madden cautioned that the new board should not get caught up in the everyday Council proceedings.

"Making significant improvements often does not require fancy resolutions," Madden said.

Wright also spoke on his recommendations for the new executive board. His suggestions include focusing on more online resources, such as putting up appropriations information online.

Abby Fifer will head the new 2001-2002 executive board composed of second-year College student Adam Swann as executive vice president and third-year Architecture student Marissa Cato as vice president for administration. Harris will continue in her previous position.
