Cavaliers take on defending champions

The Virginia field hockey team gears up for a tough game against defending national champion No. 2 Old Dominion (4-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the University Hall Turf Field.

The No. 12 Cavaliers (4-1) are heading into the game with four straight wins after Wednesday night's 2-0 victory over the Richmond (5-1). Virginia not only shut out its opponent for the second consecutive game, but also handed the Spiders their first loss of the season. Sophomore Kiersten Van Hooser set the pace for the game within minutes by scoring the first goal for the Cavaliers. Junior Molly McManus secured the victory with the second goal. Junior Katie Slocum assisted on both goals.

  • Although the Lady Monarchs started out the 2001 season with two losses in a row, the team quickly bounced back and has proven itself to be a very tough opponent. The squad rallied on its home field to defeat No. 3 Maryland, 2-1, on Sept. 1. The game brought Old Dominion's losing streak to an abrupt stop and the team remains undefeated on its own turf in the past four games.

The Lady Monarchs' 4-1 victory over Boston University on Sept. 9 was the Lady Monarch's highest scoring game so far this season. However, the squad hasn't played an away game for several weeks, and the Cavaliers are looking to use their own home field to their advantage.

"We're excited about the challenge of playing the returning national champion at home," said Virginia head coach Jessica Wilk. "Sunday's game will be a good measuring bar for the team."

ODU already has received several admirable honors very early on in the season. Two of the most powerful players and leaders on the ODU team already have been named Colonial Athletic Association field hockey player of the week: senior midfielder Crystal Carper and senior defender Adrienne Yoder.

In the 2000 match-up between Virginia and ODU, the Lady Monarchs dominated the Cavaliers and finished off the game with a score of 5-1. The Cavaliers hope that this season's result will be very different.

"ODU has an incredible team, and it's always a challenge to play them, but we hope to take it to them this time," White said.
