Eight Wyoming runners killed in crash
Eight University of Wyoming track and field and cross-country athletes were killed early Sunday morning in a two-car collision 17 miles south of Laramie, Wyo. The eight fatalities were Justin Lambert-Belanger, Cody Brown, Kyle Johnson, Joshua Jones, Morgan McLeland, Kevin Salverson, Nicholas Schabron and Shane Shatto. One student, Clinton Haskins, remains in intensive care.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the eight students were traveling north in a Jeep Wagoneer when it collided with Haskins' Chevrolet pickup truck around 1:30 a.m.
The students were traveling in a private vehicle and not as part of a team event. The accident remains under investigation and no further details are available at this time, according to police.
Two Division I-AA teams play on
Tennesse-Martin defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 54-14 in the only Division I athletic event across the nation that was played as scheduled this week. Local firefighters and policemen joined players and cheerleaders from both teams on the field in tribute to those who died in last Tuesday's terrorist attacks. The crowd of 4,645 observed a moment of silence and heard renditions of both "Taps" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" before singing "God Bless America" without musical accompaniment.
Tennessee-Martin coach Sam McCorkle said the schools did not have the travel safety and television coverage concerns of the larger conferences and professional leagues and so wanted to play the game in order to take students' minds off the tragedy. Tennessee-Martin athletic director Phil Dane added that he does not think the "evil acts of terrorists" should keep people from living their lives.
