Wake Forest leads way in ACC weekly honors
The Demon Deacon football team, in light of its 21-19 upset victory over East Carolina, received three player recognitions in this week's conference honors. The ACC named Tarence Williams offensive back of the week, Michael Collins offensive lineman of the week and Marcus McGruder rookie of the week.
Williams carried 35 times for a team-high 158 yards and a touchdown. Collins, a 6-foot-6, 290 pound guard, led the way as the Deacons grounded out an ACC season-high 290 rushing yards on 69 carries.
McGruder, in his first collegiate start, made crucial big plays, including a 15-yard sack and an interception.
Evidence confirms Almonte was ineligible
Little League star pitcher Danny Almonte still was finishing school in the Dominican Republic on June 15 and thus could not have been eligible to participate in the World Series, a Dominican school official announced today.
The announcement comes on the heels of another contradiction in Almonte's status. A public records official uncovered a birth certificate indicating Almonte was born on April 7, 1987, not 1989, as previously indicated, and was therefore too old for Little League play.
The Bronx-based Rolando Paulino All-Stars team has been stripped of its third-place finish in the World Series as a result of these developments. All of Almonte's individual records also have been voided.
Almonte's father was criminally charged for falsifying a birth certificate and could serve jail time if convicted.
