Field hockey downs Ohio, SW Missouri State
On Saturday, the Cavaliers rallied to tie Ohio at two with 34 seconds left on midfielder Jessie Coleman's goal. Then Coleman punched in the game-winner with 3:55 left in overtime to give the Cavaliers a 3-2 victory. With the goal, Coleman passed the 100-point plateau and became just the seventh player in Virginia field hockey history to eclipse the mark. Senior midfielder Carrie Goodloe notched both assists.
Coleman scored twice more yesterday in Virginia's 4-0 victory over Southwest Missouri State. Her goals gave her 45 career goals - five short of the school record held by Michelle Vizzuso (1983-1987).
The Cavaliers limited the Bears to five shots as sophomore goalkeeper Emily White recorded her first shutout of the season. McManus and sophomore Katie Nicholson also scored, and sophomore Katie Jo Gerfen and senior Mason White added two assists.
The Cavaliers will face top-ranked North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Sunday.
Volleyball splits matches, grabs second at tourney
After advancing to the finals of the William & Mary Hi-IQ Classic by beating Davidson and Columbia, the Cavaliers fell to host William & Mary, 3-0, in the championship Saturday.
The Cavaliers beat Columbia, 3-0, earlier in the day, before the Tribe ended the Cavaliers' three-match winning streak. Virginia beat Davidson on Friday, 3-1, and finished the tournament with a 2-1 mark.
Middle Shannon Boyle and setter Abby Whittenburg were both named to the all-tournament team. The Cavaliers will play again tomorrow night at Georgetown.
