Virginia field hockey downs Central Michigan

The Virginia field hockey team jumped out to an early lead and didn't let go in its matchup yesterday against Central Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. Sophomore Katie Jo Gerfen scored the first Virginia goal five minutes into the game.

Two minutes later, a corner play resulted in a score by Cavalier midfielder Jessica Coleman. The goal started a three-goal run for her in the first half. Cara Unterkofler added to the Cavalier lead by scoring with two minutes left in the half.

Central Michigan got its one and only score of the game on a goal by Melissa Lazarevski to end the first half with Virginia up, 5-1.

The Chippewas failed to convert on many breakaway opportunities they had in the second half, but Virginia added two more goals. Cavalier forward Katie Nicholson scored with seven minutes left. Later in the half, Virginia junior Katie Slocum scooped up a Nicholson miss and put it in with 10 seconds remaining and gave the Cavaliers a 7-1 victory.

The Cavaliers return to action next weekend in Athens, Ohio, where they will take on Ohio University and Southwest Missouri State.
