Jones severely injured in accident

Virginia freshman cornerback Randy Jones, a redshirt this season, was critically injured in a car accident that occurred Sunday night near Stoneville, N.C., according to the Greensboro News & Record.

Jones' oldest brother, Travis Wilson, 22, reportedly was driving and has been charged with three counts of felony death by motor vehicle and driving while impaired. According to the News & Record, North Carolina state troopers said that Wilson was legally drunk when he was driving his 1995 Chrysler. Wilson was driving too fast when he lost control of the car. The car fell on its side and slid into the path of two riders on a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Jones' other brother, Moses Wilson, 20, was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene. Jones, 18, and another passenger, John Stanback Jr., 20, suffered serious injuries. Both motorcycle riders were killed at the scene. The crash occurred at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday night on U.S. 220, the News & Record said.

A third car rolled over several times following an attempt to avoid the crash. The passengers of that vehicle suffered minor injuries, according to the News & Record.

Jones came to Virginia from Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham, N.C. He played safety and linebacker at his high school. Jones, 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, helped lead Richmond Senior High School to a 12-1 record as a senior and to the state championship as a sophomore.

He was selected as the No. 4 player in North Carolina by Superprep, a recruiting magazine, as a senior. Jones was named the defensive most valuable player for the North Carolina squad after recording 10 tackles in the North Carolina-South Carolina Shrine Bowl.

Although the News & Record reported that Jones' injuries are severe, the North Carolina state police did not have an update on the severity of the injuries yesterday.

"We do not have any information on injuries," said a North Carolina State Police dispatcher. "We only have the information on the deceased."

Virginia coach Al Groh was not available for comment.
