According to the Anchorslam T-shirts, it was "the only day it's okay to score with three."
On a picture-perfect Sunday afternoon, members of Delta Gamma sorority held their second annual Anchorslam philanthropy event.
From 11 p.m. to 3 p.m., 16 teams of three to five participants took to the courts behind the Dell for a three-on-three basketball tournament. All week long, teams registered on the Lawn by donating $15 per player, with proceeds going to raise money for "Service for Sight," a program oriented with sight conservation and aid for the blind. This year, some of the proceeds will be going toward the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks as well.
"I think basketball is something that appeals to a large group of people and it will make it easier for people to get involved," said third-year College student Katie Smelley, the director of Delta Gamma's Anchorslam. "We had a team of girls show up today and they did really well. There has been a lot of energy and enthusiasm about this."
In a single elimination format, each team played at least two games in either the winner's or loser's bracket. The winning team of fourth-year College student Brandon Lloyd, third-year College student Ben Skipper, fourth-year Commerce student Cade Lemcke and fourth-year College student Douglas Andrew were awarded a $75 cash prize and gift certificates to the Greenskeeper and Ben and Jerry's. Their participation, however, had nothing to do with the prizes.
"It's all about the charity," Lemcke said. "It's a great cause. It's been great weather and a fun afternoon"
