Sports in Brief

The Florida State football may be without one of its starting defensive ends when it plays Virginia on Oct. 20. Alonzo Jackson sprained a ligament against Wake Forest in Saturday's game.

The Seminoles announced Tuesday that Jackson would miss three to four weeks, including next week's game against No. 1 Miami.

If the three-week prediction is correct, Jackson will not be ready when Florida State takes on Virginia at Scott Stadium, and he could miss the following week's game against Maryland. Maryland and Virginia share the lead at the top of the ACC and will play at Maryland on Saturday.

The Seminoles already have been riddled with injuries this season, which contributed to Florida State's third conference loss since joining the ACC in 1992. The embarrassing 41-9 loss to UNC on Sept. 22 came after the Seminoles lost three wide receivers and a fullback to injury. Florida State also was without senior defensive end Eric Powell, who is unable to play football after being shot in the back during an armed robbery attempt.
