Women's soccer defeats George Mason
The Virginia women's soccer team took out George Mason, 1-0, in Fairfax on Sunday. With the road victory, the Cavaliers have won three consecutive games and move to 7-2-1 overall this season.
The only goal of the game came courtesy of senior co-captain Laura Gaworecki. In the 35th minute of the game, Gaworecki corralled her own missed shot and knocked it in to put Virginia on top, 1-0. Gaworecki's second goal of the season proved to be all Virginia needed for the victory over the Patriots. The win marks the Cavaliers sixth non-conference victory of the season.
Virginia dominated the game and out-shot the Patriots, 11-4. They also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Cavalier defense limited the Patriots to just one shot on goal, which was saved by Virginia goalkeeper Anne Abernethy.
Virginia will return to action Wednesday evening as it takes on Maryland at Klockner. Virginia is currently 1-1 in conference competition.
Gators sink teeth into top spot
The Florida Gators headlined this week's Associated Press top 25 rankings. The Gators took the top spot after defeating Louisiana State, 44-15, on Saturday. Despite destroying Troy State, 38-7, Miami fell to the No. 2 slot. Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Oregon round out the top five.
Four ACC teams have moved up in the rankings. Florida State moved from 16th to 14th. Georgia Tech moved two spots to 15th, and Clemson climbed to 16th. Fresh off their 20-point win over the Cavaliers, Maryland advanced three spots, up to 22nd in the rankings.
Mariners fall short of Cubs' mark
The Seattle Mariners fell one win short of setting a major league record for victories in a year, losing their regular season finale 4-3 to the Texas Rangers on Sunday.
The Mariners (116-46) equaled the record set by the 1906 Chicago Cubs on Saturday, but lost their final game when Rafael Palmeiro hit a go-ahead single off Jeff Nelson (4-3) in the ninth inning.
