Kilgore seeks to change domestic violence laws
Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore has proposed changes to the state's domestic violence laws. This week the Virginia General Assembly is likely to take up the bill, which includes greater confidentiality for victims, new fines for offenders, greater training for law enforcement officers and a streamlined process for obtaining restraining orders. Each of these measures has garnered strong support in the legislature, though some details of the bill have generated conflict between the Republican Attorney General and the Virginia State Senate. Some state senators originally were concerned with a provision that had increased penalties for acts of domestic violence that took place in the presence of a child or involved a gun. The Senate's courts committee dropped that provision from the bill.
Mellon Foundation donates $1 million to U.Va. libraries
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded a three-year, $1 million dollar grant to the University's library system to improve its electronic resources.
The money will be used to help the library's digital research and development group. The development group is hoping to build a repository for its growing collection of electronic texts, digital images and video and audio files.
The purpose of the project is to allow students and faculty to conduct technology-based research more effectively. The project is a part of the library's effort to transform itself into a "Library of Tomorrow."
Cornell University researchers will assist the University in developing the software resource.
