Teamer earns ACC rookie of the year award
Virginia freshman forward Brandi Teamer was named the 2002 rookie of the year yesterday by the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers Association. This award follows Teamer's six ACC rookie of the week awards and the conference rebounding title.
Teamer joins an elite group of only four Virginia players ever to win ACC rookie of the year. Schuye LaRue (2000), Tora Suber (1994) and former All-American Dawn Staley (1989) are the only other Cavaliers to receive the honor.
Teamer started all 29 games for the Cavaliers and was the second leading scorer on the team with 14.5 points per game behind only senior guard Telisha Quarles (15.7 points per game). Teamer also recorded more double doubles, 13, than any other player in the ACC.
Men's tennis dominates Radford, Liberty
The Virginia men's tennis team followed its shutout of Radford with a 5-1 win over Liberty in a doubleheader yesterday.
Junior No. 1 singles player Michael Duquette won his third and fourth straight matches yesterday as freshman Stephen Nolan and senior James Romesburg obtained their 12th and 13th wins of the season, respectively.
Virginia won all six matches against Radford, dropping only one set. Virginia freshman Dillon Walker recorded his first dual match victory against Radford in two sets of the No.6 singles match.
Against Liberty, senior Jonathan Chou was the only Virginia player to lose yesterday, dropping his first two sets.
Virginia freshman Jay Curtis and sophomore Gregory Alpert along with Romesburg won their matches against Liberty in two sets.
