Sports in Brief

Senior swimmer Megan Roesch received the ACC's 2002 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Award along with 19 other student-athletes Wednesday. The award is presented to select student-athletes who plan on attending graduate school full-time.

Roesch was named all-ACC this season and performed well in ACC championships with third, fourth and fifth place finishes in the 50-yard, 200 and 100 freestyle races, respectively. Roesch, a commerce major with a finance concentration, holds the school record in the 400 free relay. She is a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection and a three-time first team Academic All-American. She will receive $5,000 toward her graduate education.

McDonald's All-American teams feature ACC recruits

Ten ACC basketball recruits were named to the McDonald's All-American rosters Wednesday. Duke led all schools with four representatives, followed by North Carolina with three. Maryland, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest each had one recruit named to the squads.

  • Duke recruits J.J. Redick and Shavlik Randolph will play for the East team and will face off against future teammates Sean Dockery and Michael Thompson. North Carolina recruits Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants and Sean May also will play for the East team, along with Maryland recruit Travis Garrison and Wake Forest recruit Eric Williams. Georgia Tech recruit Chris Bosh will play for the West team.

    Although Virginia's only recruit, Derrick Byars, did not make the squad despite being named a finalist, the state of Virginia will be represented in the game. Redick plays for Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Va., while Syracuse recruit Carmelo Anthony plays for Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va.

    The McDonald's All American Game will be played April 4 in Madison Square Garden in New York.
