Eskandarian named ACC Player of the Year, two others on All-ACC team

Virginia fielded three selections for the 2002 All-ACC team with junior forward Alecko Eskandarian leading the way as the conference player of the year and a first-team All-ACC selection. Senior midfielder Kenny Arena and junior defender Matt Oliver were similarly honored, as both were named to the All-ACC second team.

Eskandarian has enjoyed a historic season for the Cavaliers. His 22 goals lead the ACC and are tied for second all-time for a single season at Virginia. It is his third consecutive first-team selection and his first player of the year award. It is, however, the second straight season a Virginia player has captured this prize -- then-junior forward Kyle Martino was named 2001 player of the year.

Arena's selection to the All-ACC team is in light of his strong midfield play. He also has contributed one goal and two assists to the offense. It was Arena's first such honor.

Oliver was named a second-team All-ACC selection for the second consecutive year. Oliver has been a defensive stalwart, helping the Cavaliers shut out 15 opponents in the last two seasons.

The ACC tournament is being held this weekend in Cary, N.C. Virginia beat Duke, 4-1, yesterday.
