University Programs Council wants to teach you how to bartend, belly dance and breakdance, among other things.

UPC Short Courses registration began yesterday afternoon and includes courses from ceramics to pilates.

Second-year College student Ashley Milton, chair of the short courses program, said the classes are designed to supplement students' academic learning.

"These classes are designed for the students," Milton said. "They are made so when you can't get into a class, you can take one of these classes."

The noncredit courses are four to eight weeks long.

She said she and her committee of about 10 students help plan the classes by coordinating instructors, times and classrooms each semester.

Milton said approximately half of the instructors are students, while the others are professionals.

The instructors are paid by fees ranging from about $35 to $80 per student per class. These fees also include necessary supplies and some profit, which is used by UPC for other programs.

Milton said the courses are offered based on their perceived popularity as shown by attendance during previous semesters and an online survey.

For example, bartending is back by popular demand, offered at 16 different times this semester.

"People who know about short courses know about bartending," Milton said.

She also said classes such as ballroom dancing, guitar and prep step are offered every semester.

There are also several courses being offered this semester that are not regularly offered, according to Milton. These courses include personal finance, party planning and Web page design, among others.

Milton said she participated in the photography course last year and found it "very fun and very informative."

Although classes have not been filled to capacity in the past, Milton said she hoped the additional marketing done by her committee this year will lead to increased attendance in the courses.

Sign up for UPC short courses is available online, and the deadline is Oct. 3.
