Field hockey drops squeaker to Tribe

William & Mary forward Kelly McQuade collected a loose ball in front of the Virginia goal and scored from short range five minutes into the overtime session, thwarting a Virginia comeback effort and securing victory for the Tribe.

The Cavaliers fell behind early in the game, allowing three William & Mary goals in the first 248 seconds. Virginia chipped away at the lead slowly, with sophomore forward Allie Flynn putting the Cavaliers on the board with 10 minutes left in the half.

Down by two goals going into the second stanza, the Cavaliers cut the Tribe lead to one in the 57th minute. Freshman mid-fielder Mia Link collected a rebound off Kelly Phillips' attempt and dragged the ball into the cage.

Virginia tied the game with under three minutes left on junior back Katie Jo Gerfen's shot to the top of the cage, but was unable to strike first in the overtime session.

The loss marked the fourth straight game the Cavaliers fell short of victory, dropping their record to 5-5. The loss was also Virginia's second straight defeat at home.

Virginia travels to Maryland this weekend to face a No. 3 Terrapins team that stands 10-1 on the season. The Cavaliers return home on Wednesday to take on in-state rival Richmond.
