Five Cavaliers named to All-ACC teams

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Tuesday that the All-ACC women's soccer team will include five Cavaliers, two of whom were named to the first team, one to the second, and two to the All-Freshman squad. Midfielders Kelly Hammond and Sarah Huffman, both of whom were named to the ACC All-Freshman team last year, were named to the first team, with Hammond leading Virginia in scoring and goals and leading the conference with six game-winning goals.

Freshman defender Becky Sauerbrunn is the first Cavalier to be honored as ACC Freshman of the Year besides being named to the All-ACC second team and the ACC All-Freshman team. Sauerbrunn has played every minute of the season and has posted two assists.

Midfielder Shannon Foley joins Sauerbrunn on the ACC All-Freshman team, tallying five goals and seven assists for a total of 17 points. Also on the All-Freshman team, Forward Ariel Thompson has contributed six goals for fourteen points. The ACC tournament continued Wednesday night as the No. 8 Cavaliers were set to meet No. 10 Duke in Cary, North Carolina in the quarterfinal round.
